A thirteen-year-old teenager has died in Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca) and three other people have been seriously injured due to the collapse of a fountain while participating in the celebrations of the Spanish national team’s victory in the Football World Cup.

According to the Castilla y León emergency service 1-1-2, the incident occurred at 00:33 hours, when the operations room received several calls alerting about the collapse of the fountain on some of the people gathered at the site. The deceased minor was inside the Árbol Gordo fountain along with other young people celebrating the Spanish team’s victory when part of the structure gave way due to the crowd, causing a stone to fall on the victim.
Several officers from the Ciudad Rodrigo Local Police tried to assist the minor, removing the debris from the collapse to free him, but the young man died from his injuries.
Three seriously injured
The 1-1-2 alerted the Ciudad Rodrigo Local Police, the Salamanca Civil Guard, the Salamanca Provincial Firefighters, and the Health Emergencies-Sacyl, which mobilized medical resources to the scene.
Three other people who were at the scene have been seriously injured.

The City Council of Ciudad Rodrigo has expressed its sorrow and condolences for the death in a statement shared on social media, emphasizing that “the entire city of Ciudad Rodrigo feels this loss and accompanies the family and friends of the minor in their grief.”
“What should have been a celebration for the Spanish National Football Team’s World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy for the entire Ciudad Rodrigo community,” lamented the municipal authority, which also expressed its wish for a “speedy recovery” for the other people affected by the incident.
In these circumstances and “as a sign of mourning for the loss, the City Council flags will fly at half-mast from July 20 to 22, inclusive,” the council stated.
