A landslide recorded this Friday in Pengshui County, in the municipality of Chongqing, in southwest China, has left at least eight dead and 34 people missing, according to local authorities. The collapse occurred early in the morning and mobilized more than 800 rescue personnel to search for people trapped under tons of earth and rocks.

Emergency teams managed to rescue 18 people alive, although eight of them later died due to the severity of their injuries. Images broadcast by Chinese state television show a huge accumulation of debris burying part of a street with houses and shops, while witnesses fled through clouds of dust after the hillside collapse. Authorities also warned that there are still unstable rocks that hinder search efforts.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for accelerating rescue tasks, clarifying the causes of the disaster, and strengthening inspections to prevent new geological risks. The central government has allocated 50 million yuan, about 7.3 million dollars, to finance emergency operations and assist those affected. The event occurs less than two weeks after another landslide in Gansu province, where 21 people died.
