“Our information matches some open-source reports you may have seen in Ukraine: the average life expectancy of a Russian recruit arriving on the battlefield in Ukraine is estimated between 20 and 30 minutes,” said the head of the Central Intelligence Agency at the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit on Wednesday.

“This is because AI drones have become highly specialized and low-cost killing machines,” he added.

US officials had already estimated that Russia loses around 7,000 soldiers per week on the Ukraine front. Their use is eroding Russia’s large numerical advantage in soldiers and has managed to limit Moscow’s advances. According to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, more than 80% of enemy targets destroyed by his army are due to drone attacks.

Ratcliffe’s statements come at a time when Washington and its allies are considering the possibility of granting new funding to Ukrainian drone programs to gain access to the technology used by these AI-guided systems.
