The King will keep his promise and this Sunday he will accompany the players of the Spanish national football team who are seeking the second star of champions to join the one they won in 2010 at the World Cup in South Africa. La Zarzuela confirmed this Wednesday that the four will travel after the King already expressed this morning, in Empúries, his excitement about making the trip and his hope to see the Spanish team crowned champions. While answering journalists’ questions, both Queen Letizia and her daughters seemed willing to accompany him.
The Kings went to the ruins of Empúries to attend a meeting with young people from the Princess of Girona Foundation and there they met with the princess and the infanta who had previously toured the Greco-Roman site.
The King showed himself to be “very happy, like everyone,” with the victory of the Spanish team against France and recalled that he had promised his players in Guadalajara (Mexico) that he would not see them again “until the final.” The championship schedule, coinciding with institutional events, prevented the King from attending the quarterfinal and semifinal matches.
After yesterday’s victory, Luis de la Fuente, coach of the Spanish national team, revealed that Felipe VI had called him to congratulate the whole team after qualifying for the 2026 World Cup final,
Asked if any other member of the royal family will attend next Sunday’s final, the monarch replied: “We are working on it,” but from his smile and that of the Queen and their daughters, it was already clear that the four would be at the final.
On Tuesday, after attending the Princess of Girona awards ceremony at the Liceu, the Kings, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía watched the Spain vs. France match in the room of the hotel in Barcelona where they were staying. After the Spanish team’s victory, La Zarzuela released images showing them celebrating the win wearing the white national team jersey, with each of their names on the back and the number 26 corresponding to the year of the World Cup being played. Alongside the royal family was the Zarzuela team that accompanies them on trips, with whom they shared the tension of the match, the joy of the goals, and snacks served on a table not shown in the released images.
Exactly two years ago, the King, along with Infanta Sofía, enjoyed Spain’s victory over England in the Euro 2024 final held at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The youngest daughter of the Kings, apparently the biggest football fan and most knowledgeable in the family, already attended, on August 20, 2023, in Sydney (Australia), together with Queen Letizia, the match in which the Spanish players were crowned world champions by defeating the England team.
Felipe and Letizia, still Princes of Asturias, witnessed, along with Queen Sofía, Spain’s triumph in the South Africa World Cup and now hope that the Spanish team repeats the feat and that they see it live and in person.
