Yes, a call will be made for a demonstration in Barcelona on Sunday the 14th of this month under the slogan “Let’s stop the social and educational emergency”. Teachers propose that language defense entities and those for the right to housing join this march, as well as families “and all of society,” in the words of the general secretary of CGT Ensenyament, Laura Gené. The aim is to thus broaden social support and gain visibility on the streets. According to Gené, what is sought with these mobilizations is “to force the PSC into a structural change in the Catalan public school system.” This demonstration will depart from Jardinets de Gràcia in Barcelona, at 11:30 AM on Sunday the 14th.

The educational conflict is more entrenched than ever after 65% of the teaching staff voted ‘no’ to the pre-agreement that the Government pact with several unions, including Ustec, the promoter of said consultation. Ustec has now aligned itself with the unions that did not sign the pre-agreement. The result of the consultation de facto meant a disauthorization of the union representatives who participated in the negotiation table with the Department of Education. In fact, the teachers’ assemblies expressed this Friday that they did not recognize the interlocution of those union spokespersons and demanded direct communication with Minister Esther Niubó.

The Department of Education, for its part, has been reiterating that it keeps the pre-agreement alive despite the manifest opposition conveyed through the consultation and also on the streets by broad educational sectors. The unions calling for Tuesday’s strike have wanted to make it clear that the conflict remains open and that they want to go much further than the salary increase of 400 euros over four years and the 6,000 provisions for inclusive education included in the pre-agreement.
