While Barcelona finalizes preparations to receive the imminent visit of Pope Leo XIV and just a few days before the Pontiff officiates a mass in the Sagrada Familia basilica, the Lego Group presented this Thursday the largest set in its history by volume of pieces: an exact replica of the expiatory temple, the city’s most emblematic building, composed of 12,060 pieces.

The launch, framed within the Lego Architecture series, is no coincidence. The commercialization of this colossal model coincides with the centenary of the death of its creator, the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.

The model, which reaches 62 centimeters in height, has been designed to faithfully reflect the complexity and scale of the real work, whose construction began in 1882. According to Rok Žgalin Kobe, designer for the Danish company, the development of this piece has been “a unique design challenge” in trying to balance precision with the nature of a “living monument that is constantly evolving.” The level of detail of the set even allows it to be divided into sections to observe its interior and recreates the characteristic effect of light passing through the basilica’s stained glass windows.

The product, aimed at an adult audience, goes on pre-sale this Thursday and will arrive in stores on November 1st with a price of 750 euros and will be sold in the brand’s store on Passeig de Gràcia, an establishment that already features, since its inauguration in 2021, another large-scale construction in homage to Gaudí’s temple.
The anticipation for the miniature version of the Sagrada Familia runs parallel to the religious activity that the basilica will host next week. Pope Leo XIV, the first pontiff to visit Spain in 15 years, will lead a mass in the Sagrada Familia on Wednesday, and will bless the tower of Jesus Christ, which crowns the expiatory temple, as it commemorates the completion of the temple’s central and tallest structure.

Robert Francis Prevost’s tour of Spain begins this Saturday in Madrid. After his visit to the Spanish capital and Barcelona, the apostolic visit will focus on the migration crisis with his trip to the Canary Islands, where he will hold meetings with migrants before ending his journey on June 12.
