Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde spoke to the media after landing in Uruguay this Tuesday to join the Uruguayan national team ahead of the World Cup starting on June 11 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The current captain of the white team following Dani Carvajal’s departure wanted to comment on the incident he had with Aurélien Tchouaméni on May 6, which caused him a traumatic brain injury. “I feel very good. I had the support and affection of all Real Madrid fans and also the club. Sometimes you have to go through these mini obstacles in football and in life to learn to grow and mature,” reflected Valverde, who trusts that the episode with the Frenchman will help him “be a better captain in the coming years.”

The Madrid player, who takes on the role as one of the captains of the team led by Marcelo Bielsa, admitted feeling “a reference” within the locker room and assured that they will seek to match the historic performance in South Africa 2010, when Uruguay reached the semifinals and finished fourth: “We grew up with that image and we would love to match it, for Uruguay to feel proud.”
