Madrid quantifies the medical strike: 10,470 surgeries and 215,344 consultations suspended

The Ministry of Health has estimated the impact on Madrid’s healthcare system of the doctors’ and specialists’ strike for a Framework Statute since December at more than 16.4 million euros, with more than 10,470 surgeries and 215,344 consultations suspended.

Specifically, the department led by Fátima Matute has estimated the damage caused during the 25 strike days carried out since December at 16,456,119 euros, according to the Ministry. A total of 26 days in six months during which 10,470 surgeries, 215,344 consultations, and 21,733 tests were suspended.

The strikes will continue next June with a new week of intermittent indefinite strike, following those carried out in mid-February, March, April, and May.

175,000 specialists across Spain

More than 175,000 doctors from all over Spain are called to the strike convened by the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM), the Andalusian Medical Union (SMA), Metges de Catalunya (MC), the Association of Doctors and Senior Graduates of Madrid (Amyts), the Medical Union of Euskadi (SME), and the Independent Specialists Union of Galicia (O’MEGA).

In the case of the Community, the Medical and Specialist Strike Committee of the Community of Madrid is made up of Amyts, SIME, MUD, and AME. The strike call affects all doctors and specialists in the region, including Primary Care, Hospital, and Out-of-Hospital care, as well as MIR, FSE, and professionals from the Central Defense Hospital Gómez Ulla, Fundación Jiménez Díaz, and centers linked to Sermas (Fundación Alcorcón, Fuenlabrada, UCR, Villalba, Valdemoro, Rey Juan Carlos, and Torrejón). Regarding minimum services, the organizers have denounced them as “abusive.”
