“Two people with febrile symptoms have been transferred to the Sacco hospital in Milan, a facility equipped with the highest levels of biocontainment and management of high-risk infectious diseases,” the Ministry reported in a statement.
Other travelers arriving from Uganda are being subjected “as a precaution” to clinical evaluations
The authorities specified that both patients will undergo diagnostic tests provided for in national and international protocols, while their family members remain under preventive health surveillance. Likewise, other travelers recently arrived from Uganda are being subjected, “as a precaution,” to clinical evaluations in highly specialized hospital centers.
The alert coincides with Uganda’s confirmation this Monday of two new cases of Ebola, raising to seven the total number of infections detected in the country since an outbreak was declared on May 15 in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The WHO Director-General warns that “the outbreak is progressing faster than us”
Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organization, has stated that the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing an “extremely serious and difficult” Ebola outbreak to manage, calling on neighboring countries to act “immediately.” Adhanom has said that the delay in detecting the outbreak means efforts are focused on catching up with the pace of the epidemic. “We are urgently scaling up operations, but for now, the outbreak is progressing faster than us,” said the Director-General, who confirmed 101 cases in the DRC and 10 confirmed deaths, although with likely much higher figures. “There are already more than 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths,” Tedros detailed.

The outbreak, declared in the Congolese province of Ituri, corresponds to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, whose fatality rate ranges between 30% and 50% and for which there is no authorized vaccine or specific treatment, according to the World Health Organization.
The Italian Government, however, insisted that the national system for preparedness and response to infectious emergencies is “fully operational,” with all procedures activated, and that the risk in the European country “remains very low.”
“The Ministry constantly monitors the evolution of the situation related to the Ebola virus in close connection with the Regions, the Higher Institute of Health, the reference hospital structures, the national health authorities, and all involved entities,” the statement adds.
