The non-appointment of Mónica Oltra as Compromís’s candidate for the Mayor of València is generating tension within the coalition. The fact that a first major pre-campaign event was organized without her further fuels doubts. Compromís will hold events on May 22 and 23 in 19 localities of the Valencian Community to kick off the 2027 municipal campaign. At the València event, which will take place on Saturday at the Malva-Rosa promenade, the presence of the virtual mayoral candidate is not planned, as reported by this newspaper yesterday.

Although in politics everything can change (and especially agendas), the call for this event organized by the municipal group has sparked interpretations. In Oltra’s circle, they explain that the former vice president had been summoned to that event “as a member through Compromís’s internal channels.” In other words, she received, like any other grassroots member, an informative newsletter. For this reason, the same sources understand that “the message is clear. They only want her to be there as a member and nothing more.”

An interpretation that reveals the distrust currently existing within the coalition with an organization that fails to appoint Oltra while she, who already made public her intention to run for Mayor on March 28, has since been holding highly media-impactful events. Just for comparison, it has already been made official that deputy Verònica Ruiz will be the mayoral candidate for Castelló, as was made clear in a press conference last Monday along with the current municipal spokesperson of the Castelló city council.

Behind this lack of understanding are the different ways of approaching the candidacy of the former most powerful woman of Compromís. While she aims to make her own team and include in the list references from other spaces and social movements — Oltra has always spoken of a candidacy that “overflows” Compromís — in Més Compromís, the coalition’s majority force, they do not want to lose control of pre-electoral agreements or the preparation of the lists.
