N-240 closed in Tarragona due to teachers' strike

A hundred teachers and educational community staff blocked the N-240 in both directions in Tarragona on Thursday morning, at the height of the Sant Pere i Sant Pau neighborhood, as part of the teachers’ strike in Catalonia. The teachers also block vehicle access to the roundabout leading to the N-240 and the Sant Pere i Sant Pau neighborhood from the A-7 highway, where the Sescelades campus of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) is located.

The Mossos d’Esquadra have diverted traffic at the city entrance via the Valls road, but dozens of cars have been trapped by the blockade since just before eight in the morning.

The protesters gathered on Doctor Mallafré street and walked to the blockade point carrying protest banners with messages such as ‘Prou excuses, pagueu la feina’ (Enough excuses, pay for the work) or ‘Defensem l’educació pública’ (We defend public education). There are banners from the CGT, Ustec, and Intersindical unions.

This protest coincides with the tenth day of mobilizations called by the USTEC, Secondary Teachers, CGT, and Intersindical unions.

The protesters intend to maintain the blockade on the N-240 until later, around 11 in the morning, when they will walk again to the center of Tarragona, to Imperial Tarraco square. At that time, a demonstration will begin with a march through the center of the Tarragonese capital.

The day of protest will last at least until lunchtime, when a protest meal is planned. In the afternoon, new road blockades are not ruled out, likely on the A-7 highway, which also passes through Tarragona.
