Every day, more and more gastronomic festivals dedicated to a single food are proliferating in Madrid, such as hamburgers, pizza, grilled red meat, or rice dishes. During the upcoming weekend, the VII Edition of the Calsotada Fest will be held in Las Rozas, where the calçot becomes the star of the party.

According to businessman David Suriol, one of the event organizers, “about 30,000 will be cooked” during the three days of the event, from May 15 to 17. “We will use pine wood to generate the flame needed for the calçot and charcoal for the meats, the toasts, the butifarra, the potatoes…,” clarifies the expert.
Consumption record: 130 in 45 minutes
One of this year’s novelties is that “you will be able to eat unlimited calçots, just like in the popular calçotades of Catalonia,” highlights Suriol.
In fact, the fifth edition of the world calçot eating championship will be held within the event. Last year’s edition set the record of eating 130 calçots in 45 minutes. To participate in this competition, you must register in advance on the festival’s website and the only requirement is to be over 18 years old. Last year, 15 people participated and a Valencian won with 130 calçots, breaking the record.

The event, organized by the Town Hall of the Madrid municipality, involves several local SMEs, such as Salsas Chovi, Calçots de Valls, the Calçot restaurant, Suriol Foods, and Cervezas La Sagra, among others. It takes place at the Alcalde Bonifacio de Santiago multipurpose center in the Madrid municipality. Admission is free and two menus are offered at 29.9 and 39.9 euros, respectively. Additionally, there is a children’s menu for 13.90 euros. About 3,000 people attended the November edition.

Besides this growing Madrid calçotada, the Castellers and the Association of Catalans in Madrid held another one last February in Vallecas, where the tasting menu was 15 euros, but the calçots were not cooked on site, as they arrived prepared from Reus.

For Suriol, the calçot is a seasonal product, available from November to March, but this entrepreneur’s team has been applying technology to break seasonality and “be able to have fresh product available for more months throughout the year.”
To enjoy the gastronomic day, there will be inflatable castles for the little ones and live music.
