The United Kingdom’s military has carried out an air operation to assist one of the passengers of the Hondius residing in Tristan da Cunha, a British territory in the South Atlantic with 221 inhabitants. The island lacks an airport, and upon learning that a passenger from the cruise with hantavirus was on the territory and showed symptoms compatible with the disease, the military sprang into action.

The passenger disembarked in Tristan da Cunha on April 14, and the island had no medical supplies either to diagnose him or to ensure his survival. The Royal Air Force and the Army chartered a plane with 3.5 tons of medical supplies, six parachutists, and a doctor and a nurse who jumped onto the islet despite dangerous wind gusts, managing to land on a golf course.
The passenger with a possible positive hantavirus test is now stable, in isolation at his home. Medical and prophylactic treatment is also being administered to the contacts of the person suspected of being infected, and it will be decided whether quarantines need to be established. The medical team sent to the island will remain there until the situation is under control.
