The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York dresses its grand staircase this Monday night to celebrate a new edition of the Met Gala. A party with a purpose, that of highlighting fashion and its intrinsic link to art, which this edition begins wrapped in controversy due to the intrusion of Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez as hosts of the gala.

The reason for their appointment is due to their millionaire donation – according to Page Six the couple has paid 10 million dollars to sponsor the event – as well as the support of Anna Wintour, the main person responsible for the event. However, their role in the most important annual fashion event has not sat well with some guests, who in response to this decision will not attend the gala.
Among them is the famous actress Meryl Streep, who despite being in full promotion of the second installment of The Devil Wears Prada, declined Wintour’s offer to be co-chair due to Bezos’s presence.
According to US media such as the Daily Mail, Streep would have rejected the invitation considering that the Amazon magnate should not be so involved in a cultural event like this.
Another name considered a major absentee from the evening is New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Although it is tradition for mayors to attend the event organized at the Met due to its cultural weight in the city, the politician would have declined his invitation for the same reason as Streep.
His refusal adds to that of several citizens who have plastered the streets of New York with posters against Jeff Bezos’s presence at the gala. This controversial episode happens at the same time as rumors grow about a possible purchase by Bezos of Condé Nast, the company that owns ‘Vogue’, the publication responsible for organizing the gala.
Another actress of the moment, Zendaya, will also not attend, although for different reasons. Due to her tight schedule promoting her latest projects, the star of Euphoria has decided not to attend the gala this year.
The artist, who always manages to grab headlines at this event for her extreme and successful styles, had attended the gala without exception for seven years and in 2024 acted as host with several memorable looks.
