Tug of war between Washington and Tehran over the Iranian peace proposal

In a situation of tug of war and with the ceasefire in limbo, a spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Sunday that they had received, through Pakistan, a response from the United States to their 14-point proposal to end the war conflict.

The spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, told state television that the U.S. stance “is being evaluated” and, once their assessment is complete, they will communicate their reply. “At this moment there is no nuclear negotiation. This issue is not included in the 14-point proposal,” added Baghaei, who specified that the plan “focuses only on ending the war,” without giving further details.

The White House had not specified or commented on its response to the proposals, except that Trump, on Saturday, did not foresee any future for it.

The negotiation on the Iranian nuclear program does not appear in the proposal to end the conflict

The U.S. president then stated that “I will soon study what Iran has just presented to us,” a list in which a key issue such as uranium enrichment by Iran, necessary to prevent the Persian country from obtaining the nuclear weapon, a true obsession for Trump and his ally Israel, does not appear.

“I cannot imagine it being acceptable, because the Iranians have not yet paid a sufficient price for what they have done to humanity and the world over the last 47 years,” Trump emphasized in a message on his social network. In the list of reproaches, he included the founding of the Islamic Republic.

Popularity polls leave Trump in a worse situation than ever, the rise in gasoline prices sinks his promise that life is better with him, and the MAGA movement is increasingly angry with him. For this reason, the U.S. president seeks all kinds of subterfuges. One day he says that Iran’s latest negotiation proposal is unacceptable, and the next he adds that he is looking at it, but without seeing any sense in it.

Every time he expresses a yes that is a no, and threatens the total destruction of Iran, the authorities of that country respond with mocking messages about his ability to win the war. And then the president replies with another warning to send Iran to hell. Iranian news agencies point out that Iran delivered its plan through the usual channel of Pakistan. The plan proposes to close the conflict in 30 days.

The proposal no longer requires Trump to lift the blockade on Iranian maritime transport in the Strait of Hormuz before negotiators meet face to face. But it does demand the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the region, the lifting of the blockade of Iranian ports and the unfreezing of its assets abroad, the payment of reparations, the removal of sanctions, a mechanism for the management of Hormuz, and “the end of the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.”

To unblock Hormuz, the president announced during the early hours of Monday a joint mission with the Middle East with the aim of escorting ships not involved in the conflict that require it, in an operation called “Project Freedom” which is to begin this Monday.

On the other hand, there is not a single mention of the nuclear issue among the 14 points, the negotiation of which is expected for when the war has ended.

In contrast to these requests, Israel ordered thousands of citizens on Sunday to leave southern Lebanon, in what constitutes an escalation of the war against Hizbullah, an ally of the Tehran regime.

The Revolutionary Guard tells Trump he must choose between a bad deal or an impossible war

Adding to this obstacle is the fact that the Iranian nuclear threat has been the only objective invoked by Trump for two months to justify the conflict. Its absence in the Iranian 14-point plan would in principle make its acceptance by the White House unfeasible.

On Sunday, the intelligence service of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard mocked Trump again. “The United States’ room for maneuver in decision-making has been reduced,” read a statement broadcast on television. “Trump must choose between an impossible military operation or a bad deal with the Islamic Republic.”

“The United States is the only pirate in the world with aircraft carriers. Our ability to face pirates is no less than our ability to sink warships. Prepare to see your aircraft carriers and forces end up in the graveyard,” threatened Mohsen Rezaei, former commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Guard, appointed military advisor to the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Jamenei.
