A worker has died and another has been injured this Tuesday while cleaning a septic tank located in the Central Market premises of Tarragona, according to sources familiar with the facts confirmed to La Vanguardia.

The incident took place around 8:00 p.m. and according to Diari de Tarragona, it occurred on level -3 of the parking lot. According to the same newspaper, both employees would have lost consciousness and may have suffered poisoning from inhaling gas or other toxic substances, something later confirmed by the Mossos d’Esquadra.
The Medical Emergency System (SEM) took care of the affected individuals.
The Firefighters sent seven units and evacuated the premises
Up to seven units of the Generalitat Firefighters went to the scene, evacuated the premises, including the underground parking levels, and established a safety perimeter as a precaution. The Firefighters have requested the evacuation of the building and adjacent points.

So far, the causes of the incident have not been disclosed. The City Council confirmed that there was an “incident” inside the market during maintenance work, although sources close to the matter stated that there was a gas concentration in the area, but in no case a leak.
Personnel from the Mossos d’Esquadra and the local Urban Guard also went to the Central Market area of Tarragona. Regarding mobility, vehicle traffic was cut off on Colom street and pedestrian passage, apart from Corsini square, where the facility is located.
