Zhuravlyov was arrested this Wednesday for his connection to the 2022 attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline, in which a team of Ukrainian divers allegedly placed explosives on one of the underwater pipelines crossing the Baltic Sea between Russia and Germany, supplying gas to Western Europe. The explosions occurred just a few months after Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

German media have reported that Zhuravlyov, a Ukrainian diver, worked as a technical consultant on Snake Island, the new political thriller by Doug Liman that reconstructs the sabotage attributed to him and is currently being filmed in various Croatian locations. The film, starring Sean Penn and Adrien Brody, is still in production and has no release date yet. Photographs published yesterday by the Croatian press show the alleged saboteur being escorted by local agents.

Zhuravlyov and the Ukrainian government have repeatedly denied any link to the attack. In 2023, an advisor close to President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X that, beyond the “entertaining conspiracy theories” circulating about Kyiv, the government “had nothing to do with the Baltic incident” and had “no information about pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups.” That same year, however, reports from The New York Times and Die Zeit revealed that US and European intelligence services pointed to a pro-Ukrainian group as the perpetrators of the attack.

In 2024, despite having an active arrest warrant, Zhuravlyov evaded authorities in Poland and fled to Ukraine, allegedly hidden in the trunk of a diplomatic vehicle. A year later, a Polish judge released him again and refused to execute the European arrest warrant requested by Germany, considering that the Nord Stream explosion could be understood as a legitimate act within a defensive war. A considerable part of Russian military funding comes precisely from oil and gas exports.
So far, Liman’s production team has not commented on the matter.
