The neighbors of two apartment blocks in the Trinitat Vella neighborhood of Barcelona were evacuated from their homes last night by the Bombers de Barcelona after feeling their blocks shaking.

Around three in the morning, 112 began receiving calls from residents of buildings on Pare Pérez del Pulgar street and Via Barcino. They reported with great distress that the building was moving. The emergency operator dispatched patrols from the Guardia Urbana and Bombers de Barcelona, who evacuated the 76 residents of the 16 units in one of the affected blocks.
They were able to return to their homes two hours later, scared, worried, but with the assurance from the Bombers that the blocks had not suffered any structural damage.
A compactor machine near Vallbona is pointed to as the cause
The movement is attributed to the works being carried out by the Railway Infrastructure Administrator (Adif) in the construction of the Aigües junction. This is a complementary project to the Montcada undergrounding, in the Vallbona and Trinitat area, to reconfigure the tracks in that section and build what is known as a flying junction that will avoid train crossings at the same level and thus improve operations.

The work of a soil compaction machine that was operating at that moment is pointed to as the main cause in the preliminary investigation. Safety officials have ordered the work to be halted and are on site this Thursday assessing the consequences.
A new incident added to the L9 in Putxet and the Montcada undergrounding
All this happens very close to where a sinkhole occurred two weeks ago. In that case, no residents were evacuated. The large hole swallowed a crane and construction materials and forced the Rodalies service to be cut on that section for nearly a week.
These two incidents related to the works being carried out by Adif in the area add to those of the L9 tunnel boring machine in Putxet, where residents of several blocks have been out of their homes for over a month due to a sinkhole.
