Traveling with dogs has become an increasingly common necessity for many families. Pets no longer always stay at home during vacations or long trips, and public transportation is beginning to adapt to an evident social reality: for many households, the dog is part of the journey.

Renfe now takes a significant step in that direction. From July 21, 2026, coinciding with World Dog Day, it will allow dogs up to 40 kilos to travel on all its trains, both commercial and public services. The measure expands a model that until now only worked on some AVE and specific corridors.
What changes from July 21?
Until now, traveling with large dogs on Renfe was only possible on certain trains and routes. The new measure extends the service to AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed, Intercity, Avant, and Media Distancia, which means bringing the “pet friendly” model to practically the entire national territory.

Another important detail also changes: travelers will be able to board with their dog from any intermediate stop on the route, not just from the origin station. This greatly facilitates planning for long trips or routes with several stops.
The company states that with this expansion it seeks more inclusive mobility adapted to new ways of traveling. But the opening does not mean that any dog can board under any condition.
How much does it cost and how many dogs can travel?
Here is the key data for the user: only two dogs up to 40 kilos can travel on each train. They will be located in the car identified as “pet friendly” and the system will automatically assign two adjacent seats when the owner buys their ticket and the dog supplement.
The surcharge will be 40 euros on AVE, Alvia, Intercity, Euromed, and Avlo. On Avant and Media Distancia, the corresponding general fare will apply. When purchasing the ticket, a dog paw print will identify trains that allow pets without a carrier.
This limit of two dogs per train makes planning important. It is not enough to decide to travel with the animal: it is advisable to book in advance, check that the train has available space, and review the conditions before finalizing the trip.
Which dogs are excluded?
The measure has clear exclusions. Dogs under one year old, breeds considered potentially dangerous, and females in heat will not be able to travel with this system.

This type of travel will also not be allowed on trains with connections, on services with scheduled alternative transport plans, or on synergized seats, that is, commercial train seats temporarily enabled to be sold at public service prices.
This point is important because it avoids a common confusion: that Renfe expanding the service to all its trains does not mean that all operational conditions disappear. Availability will depend on the type of seat, the specific train, and whether the service allows that supplement.
How should the dog travel?
The dog will occupy the interior seat next to the window, beside its owner. It must wear a non-extendable 1.5-meter leash and a muzzle both at the station and during boarding and disembarking.
The owner must carry official documentation in order: updated vaccination card or European passport for companion animals. They must also travel with a cleaning kit including a pad, wipes, bags, disinfectant spray, and deodorizer.
At access controls for commercial and Avant services, Renfe will also provide a travel kit with a seat cover and mat for the dog, which the owner must place and remove at the end of the journey.
The detail to prepare beforehand
Beyond the ticket, the key is to prepare the animal. A large dog that has never been at a station, that does not tolerate the muzzle, or that gets stressed by noise and crowds can have a bad trip even if it meets the requirements.
Therefore, it is advisable to get it used to the muzzle beforehand, practice short trips, bring water, avoid heavy meals just before boarding, and consult the veterinarian if the animal has anxiety, advanced age, or health problems.
The official reference is Renfe’s own regulations: ticket, supplement, documentation, leash, muzzle, cleanliness, and respect for other travelers. The measure opens more doors to travel with large dogs but also demands responsibility so that the model works without harming the animal or the rest of the train.
