In another video by Josep Roca and IBMeteo, several people are seen at the port, frightened by the size of the waterspout as the water rises under a threatening gray sky. In a third video, the path of the ‘cap de fibló’ is followed as it is about to reach land in an area of the port with numerous bars and restaurants. The waterspout causes some damage by displacing several containers in the area and then dissipates.

Waterspouts (also called marine tornadoes) are rotating columns of air that connect a cloud with the surface of the sea. They form when the contrast between warm, humid air below and cold air above is large, which is what happened this Friday in Menorca.

The air rises strongly and can start to rotate, and the Balearic Islands are one of the areas in Spain where the most waterspouts are observed, although they usually appear at the end of summer due to the combination of a warm sea in autumn and pockets of cold air. Normally, they form over water and do not reach the coast, but sometimes they can cause tornadoes and serious damage.
